Cold caps save hair in breast cancer patients

A new therapy could help reduce hair loss in women being treated for Breast Cancer. CBS Reporter Barry Peterson investigated a technique called “cold caps,” which have been used for decades in Europe. Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy wear caps chilled with dry ice as they receive the treatment. The caps are worn for eight hours and changed out every twenty to thirty minutes. Doctors believe the procedure is successful because it constricts blood flow, keeping the chemo from reaching hair follicles. Over 66% of people who have tried the cold caps kept more than half of their hair.
